Does it seem strange that both Bruce lee and his son died young in such a mysterious way.  Bruce Lee was globally known for his martial arts movies as his skills were a spectacle to behold. As he was a practicing martial art expert, he had taken painkillers for most of his adult life without any sign of side effects (Taylor). Married with two children, Lee died in the Hong Kong apartment of Taiwanese actress Betty Ting Pei (Bruce Lee).  Ting Pei had given Lee Equagesic for a headache but soon after he was found dead on the bed (Polly). The official cause of death states that he died from a cerebral edema (a swelling of the brain) and the coroner’s report concluded that it was caused by an allergic reaction to the tranquillizer meprobamate, the main ingredient in Equagesic, an over-the-counter painkiller (2). Due to the series of events speculation of what killed Bruce Lee has created many theories such as:

1. Did the removed Sweat glands under his armpits caused his death?
2. Are the Lee’s tied to an ancient curse?
3. Was Bruce Lee murdered by Ting Pei?

The renowned martial art expert Bruce Lee’s death revolved around questionable occurrences that portrays multiple stories, the focus of this essay is if the triads are tied to his death.

Character Analysis

Bruce Lee was renowned around the world for his martial arts along with the ability to inspire an entire generation to dive into martial arts. What made Bruce Lee stand out where these three-character traits; his ability to remain energetic, dedication to martial arts, and outgoing personality. The culmination of these three traits captivated viewers as they demonstrated what kind of individual Bruce Lee was at his core. These three traits were the foundation of his success as they were deeply rooted to who Bruce Lee was as a person.

Given a simple glance at Bruce Lee and what he has accomplished throughout his life the kind of goals that he set for himself required a vigorous amount of energy to continuously achieve them. Bruce Lee was energetic, this character trait developed into the source of what would lead Bruce Lee to become a living legend (Bruce Lee). Bruce Lee grew up with “a tremendous amount of energy which would lead him into trouble, a productive use of this energy became martial arts” (1). Martial arts helped “the flow of Bruce Lee’s energy,” along with martial arts Lee participated in acting and in 1958 became the crown colony Cha Cha champion of Hong Kong (Google Arts & Culture, 1). Along with naturally being energetic Lee had a healthy diet, this consisted of multiple meals a day (Tom). Given that his parents were Cantonese and Eurasian he primarily ate Chinese dishes and did not shy away from eating organ meats, which are high in B- Vitamins and minerals (2).

The ability to achieve a goal requires dedication to accomplish them, Bruce Lee has demonstrated repeatedly that he could dedicate himself to a particular goal and reach them with excellence. This defining trait is demonstrated in every aspect of his life; martial arts, acting career, philosophy, and his family (Bruce Lee). At the age of 13 Bruce Lee dedicated five years to study the Wing Chun style of Gung Fu under master Yip Man, a teacher of the Wing Chun style of Gung Fu (1). Lee studied diligently and became proficient, no one forced him to follow this path Lee chose to commit time, effort, and energy to learn a skill (1). Once Lee arrived in America, he dedicated himself to pursuing the completion of his education (1). Bruce Lee enrolled at Edison Technical School where he fulfilled the requirements for the equivalent of a high school graduation, Lee then enrolled at the University of Washington for a degree in philosophy (1). Bruce Lee funded his education by “teaching Gung Fu, stuffing newspapers and other odd jobs” (1). Lee’s determination to complete his education demonstrates his dedication to his goal.

Lee’s skills were astonishing but what elevated him into becoming an icon was his outgoing personality. As a child he participated in over 20 films in Hong Kong, which developed his talent of leaving a positive impression, charismatic personality, and confidence (Google Arts & Culture). In August of 1964, Ed Parker, “regarded as the father of American Kenpo, invited Lee to Long Beach, CA to give a demonstration at his First International Karate Tournament” (Bruce Lee). Lee’s ability caught the eye of Jey Sebring, a well-known stylist to celebrities, who was in the crowd (2). Sebring described what he experienced to his producer client William Dozier; “Dozier later acquired a copy of the film that was taken Ed Parker’s tournament” (2). As the Bruce Lee family company website states, “The next week he called Bruce at home in Oakland and invited him to come to Los Angeles for a screen test.” (2). The ability to captivate both individuals demonstrate his outgoing personality, this trait has been opening doors that impacted his life in ways that he could not have imagined.

Bruce Lee did not become famous out of nowhere. Lee’s actions and character opened the pathway to his success. Lee’s energetic trait provided the source to continuously meet his expectations and ambitions, while his discipline made his goals into reality, and lastly Lee’s outgoing personality sculpted the iconic portrayal of his legacy. Bruce Lee inspired millions through being true to himself.

Conspiracy Theory Argumentative Essay

Since the death of Bruce Lee, the mystery of the cause of his death has resulted in the rise of multiple conspiracy theories to fill the interest of the public. The conspiracies consist of: the removal of his sweat glands under his armpit caused his death, are the Lee’s tied to an ancient curse, and was Bruce Lee murdered by Ting Pei.

A theory that is based on some truths has been circling this mystery, the removal of Bruce Lee’s sweat glands under armpits may have been one the cause for his death. Lee’s surgical removement of his sweat glands under his armpit results similar issues as the medical condition named anhidrosis, “Anhidrosis is a condition in which your sweat glands don’t function as they should to remove heat and cool your body down” (Clevland Clinic). Severe cases of anhidrosis may result in serous heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or a heat stroke (1). What makes this theory not work is the coroner's report. The cause of death being a cerebral edema a swelling of the brain which was due to an allergic reaction to the meprobamate the main ingredient in Equagesic which is further supported by Ting Pei’s recounting of the events (Polly). Ting Pei gave Lee  Equagesic to treat his dizziness and when she returned to check on Lee, “He was dead in the bed” (Chang). As Lee had surgically removed his sweat glands under his armpits the lack of sweat gland causes a decrease of the rate in which the body cools itself down and in the day that Lee died it was recorded as one of the hottest days of the month in tropical Hong Kong (Taylor). Although the dizziness can be traced back to overheating due to the lack of sweat glands, it does not explain the cerebral edema.

Following the idea that both Bruce Lee and his son died young, a conspiracy of the Lee’s being cursed has been attracting attention. Both Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee died within the period of their box office hit Movie release (Bruce Lee, Raga). Bruce Lee stared in Game of Death, a Hollywood production, the movie contained a scene which accurately depicted Brandon Lee’s death (The curse of the Dragon (why did the Lee’s die?)). Brandon Lee’s cause of death was discovered after an investigation, “When the gun had previously been used on the set of The Crow, a lead tip from one of the modified live bullets had gotten lodged in the barrel” (3). The productions of The Crow, and Dragon the Bruce Lee story contained multiple accidents (1). Within two months the following events occurred: the lead actor's grandmother died, lead actress's brother died, a producer uncle died, and the writer/director had a heart attack (2). The most startling information is that on the same day 3 freak accidents occurred on set (2). What creates a peculiar interest to the curse theory is Brandon's death, “Brandon what shot in the abdomen with a 40-caliber immediate treatment of abdominal wound has an 88.3% overall survival rate, no vascular injury it is 97.3 % survival rate” (2). Although the idea of a curse playing a role to the mysterious death of both Lee’s create a fascinating answer, sadly, the method to how both Lee’s causes of death differentiate, as well as their personality, demonstrates that they naturally avoided presenting themselves in a disrespectful way to avoid malice from people.

Circling back to how Lee died, the theory of Ting Pei intentionally murdering Lee has garnered awareness to the public. As Lee’s death was a bazar end to a legend, his death garnered the attention of the public as they wanted answers to how it occurred. The Bruce Lee family company upheld this statement as Lee’s death in his biographical page, “Bruce had a minor headache. He was offered a prescription painkiller called Equagesic. After taking the pill, he went to lie down and lapsed into a coma” (Bruce Lee). Lee’s autopsy states his cause of death was an allergic reaction to Equagesic, “Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, is always accompanied by other symptoms—an enflamed trachea, neck, tongue, and lips, as well as hives and red itchy skin in and around the mouth” (Polly). As Bruce Lee died from an allergic reaction it could be stated it was a severe case, “In fatal cases, the swelling of the throat blocks the airway resulting in asphyxia and cerebral edema” (2). The autopsy revealed no symptoms of anaphylaxis. The reasoning to why the theory does not work is that the main cause of Bruce Lee’s death was a cerebral edema a swelling of the brain a result to an allergic reaction to the tranquillizer meprobamate, the main ingredient in Equagesic, an over-the-counter painkiller which Thing Pei offered to Bruce Lee as a remedy for his headache (Chang). As a “veteran martial arts expert, Lee had taken painkillers most of his adult life without any side effects” and as a result both participants would not be alert of over-the-counter painkillers (Taylor).

The conspiracies mentioned are indeed alluring to the audience but as justified with research and clarification the answer to this mysterious death of lies somewhere else.
